Preparation

IMPORTANT!Prior to downloading LANDesk® Service Packs, add http://*.landesk.com to the trusted sites list in Internet Explorer to avoid "Unknown publisher errors" when installing the Service Pack. Failure to do so can cause issues on files within the service packs. For more information on this please refer to this document:

Error: "Unknown publisher. Do you want to continue?"

  1. Download the latest Service Pack from here:
Download the latest Service Pack for LANDesk Software products

  2. Unzip the Service pack .ZIP file to a temporary directory.
Note: The service pack zip file contains .ZIP files within itself. These zip files upgrade different portions of your LANDesk Environment.

An example of the .ZIP files within LDMS 8.7 Service Pack 3 are as follows:

LD87-SP3-Core.zip -- Core Server files, to be used on the Core Server and Off-Core Inventory Servers
    LD87-SP3-Rollupcore.zip -- Rollup Core files.
LD87-SP3-Webconsole.zip -- Web console files (Only used for Web consoles not installed on the core server)
LD87-SP3-Console.zip -- Remote Console files (Does not need to be installed on the core server)
    LD87-SP3-Client.zip -- Client files

      Typical update order:
Core, Off-Core Inventory Servers, Rollup Core, Web Console, Remote Consoles, Clients

Failure to also update the remote consoles to the latest service pack version will cause unpredictable errors.

If you have issues that show up on your remote console, but do not happen when on the Core Server, check your patch level on the remote consoles.
  3. Back up the Core Server and the Database.

  4. Back up your IIS Configuration.
    1. Go to Start | Administrative Tools | Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
    2. Right click on Servername (local computer) and select All Tasks | Backup/Restore Configuration
    3. Click Create Backup.
    4. Name the backup "Before Service Pack X" (Where X is the Service pack number).
    5. Click OK.

Service Pack Installation

WARNING!FOR CUSTOMERS WITH AN OFF-CORE INVENTORY SERVER

BEFORE APPLYING THIS PATCH TO THE CORE SERVER MAKE SURE YOU STOP THE INVENTORY SERVICE ON THE OFF-CORE INVENTORY SERVER. FAILURE TO DO THIS CAN RESULT IN POSSIBLE DATABASE CORRUPTION. THIS PATCH UPDATES THE DATABASE TABLES AND IF AN OFF-CORE INVENTORY SERVER INSERTS A SCAN INTO THE DATABASE DURING THIS PROCESS, THE UPDATE MAY FAIL

For more information on off-core inventory servers and this service pack, see "Off-core inventory server issues" in the release notes that are part of the service pack documentation download.

  • Because of the size of most Service Packs it may take a while to install. Please be patient.

Note: The Core patch will update Core Servers, Rollup Cores, Web Consoles, and Remote Consoles. Seperate patches for Rollup Cores, Web Consoles, and Remote consoles were created as they are smaller files and at times are more viable for use in some environments.**

Installing the Service Pack on the Core Server

  1. Extract the core .ZIP file and run Setup.exe from the resulting folder.

Note: The status column for the patch update program may pause for a moment while updating large files. This is expected behavior, and progress will continue automatically as soon as these large files finish updating.
Note: The percentage indicator updates on a per-component basis. Depending upon the number of components installed on the core server, the status can potentially update up to ten times for the patch.

  2. When Setup finishes, it will request a reboot of the core server. Always reboot the Core Server after a Service Pack is applied.

Note: If the Asset Manager add-on product is installed after installing SP3, or if other components are added to the core installation, the SP3 patch will need to be re-installed.

Installing the Service Pack on All Off Core Inventory Servers

Note: After you've applied SP3 to the core server, you must apply SP3 to all off-core inventory servers, if you have any.

  1. Extract the Core .ZIP file and run Setup.exe from the extracted folder.

  2. When Setup finishes, reboot the off-core inventory server.

Installing the Service Pack on the Addition Remote Management Consoles Not Located on the Core Server

Note: When reinstalling Remote Consoles, the Service Pack must be applied afterwards. Updating the core server does not update the Remote Console installation directory at \Program files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\Console.

  1. Extract the Console .ZIP file (or use the Core.zip) and run Setup.exe from the extracted folder.

  2. When Setup finishes, reboot the off-core inventory server.

-or-

  1. Use the Security and Patch Manager tool to automate the Service Pack update.
Note  : The Service Pack vulnerability definition will determine the proper files to install.

Installing the Service Pack on all Off-Core Web Console Servers

  1. On the Core Server, stop the LANDesk Inventory Server service.

  2. On the off-Core Invnentory Server, extract the Webconsole .ZIP file (or use the Core.zip) and run Setup.exe from the extracted folder.

  3. When Setup finishes, reboot the off-core inventory server.

  4. Wait for the reboot to complete.

  5. On the Core Server, restart the LANDesk Inventory Server service.

Installing the Service Pack on Agent Workstations

Install the service pack for agent workstation using any of the following methods:

  • Use the Security and Patch Manager tool to automate the client update. The Service Pack vulnerability definition will determine the proper files to install.

  • Use the Scheduled Tasks window to "push" an Agent Configuration to client computers.

  • Launch  WSCFG32.EXE on selected client computers.

Installing the Service Pack on Server Manager Client

Install the service pack for Agent Servers using any of the following methods:

  • Use the Scheduled Tasks window to "push" a client configuration to client computers.

  • Launch  SERVERCONFIG.EXE on selected client computers.

Note: If you are installing the server agent, the computer will need to be rebooted for all of the monitoring information to be available. The "Reboot if necessary" option should be chosen if you can immediately reboot the server. If the option is chosen to not reboot, the product will not function properly until the server is rebooted.

Note: If you are using custom Linux agent configurations, these will need to be rebuilt in the Agent Configuration tool.

Installing the Service Pack on Rollup Core Servers

  1. Extract the Rollup .ZIP file (or use the Core.zip) and run Setup.exe from the extracted folder. If your rollup core hosts the Web console, you also need to run Setup.exe for the Web console patch once the rollup core patch finishes.

  2. When Setup finishes, reboot the rollup core server.

Post-Installation Steps

Update the Help File for the Management Suite Console

The updated help files are not included in the Service Pack .ZIP file. You can find the updated help file link here as well: Document 1001

To update LANDesk Management Suite Windows console help, exit the Management Suite Console and copy ldms.chm from this zip file's ldms folder to the following folder on core servers and additional consoles:

  • \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite

To update LANDesk Management Web console help, copy the contents of this zip file's ldms\help folder to the following folder on your web console server:

  • \Inetpub\wwwroot\remote\help

To update LANDesk Server Manager Web console help, copy the contents of this zip file's ldsm\help folder to the following folder on your Web console server:

  • \Inetpub\wwwroot\LANDesk\LDSM\help

Some files in the ldsm\help folder are empty files. This is intentional. These files are not used in 8.70 SP3 help but are copied over existing files so the old files are replaced.

If you get "Cannot display the webpage" errors when accessing LDMS.CHM on Windows Server 2003, LDMS.CHM may be blocked by the server. In explorer, display the file properties for LDMS.CHM. If the file is blocked, unblock it.

Back-up the IIS configuration on the Core Server

Back up your IIS Configuration using the following steps:

  1. Go to Start | Administrative Tools | Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

  2. Right click on Servername (local computer) and select All Tasks | Backup/Restore Configuration

  3. Click Create Backup.

  4. Name the backup "After Service Pack X" (Where X is the Service pack number).

  5. Click OK.
