Issue: Unable to build the core server activation file

Problem

 

Error: "Unable to build the core server activation file" when activating the core server.

Solution / Workaround

 

Delete all temporary files

  1. Check That you have plenty of disk space available for the drive that hosts "\Program Files\LANDesk\Authorization Files". Please use variable %LDMS_HOME% to determine the location of where LDMS or EPM is installed.
  2. Navigate to "\Program Files\LANDesk\Authorization Files" and delete all the files in this location.
  3. Navigate to "%temp%" and delete all the files in this location.
  4. Navigate to "C:\Windows\Temp" and delete all the files in this location.

 

Make sure correct certificate is being used.

  1. Check this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Setup - Certname
  2. Verify if the "Certname" from above matches the certificate name in "\Program Files\LANDesk\Shared Files\Keys". If not, adjust the registry to show the proper name. NOTE: The certificate name will not have the file extension in the registry
  3. Check that "protect.ini" is referencing the correct <hashname>.0 file and that .0 file has the correct core server name.

 

Replace ldpgp

  1. There are 2 files that you would replace; ldpgp.exe and ldpgp.sig. These files are used to encrypt the license files and can sometimes become corrupt.
  2. Replace these two files with the ones from the installer. Here is the location from the 9.6 flat installer: "\LANDeskSoftware960\LANDESK\LDMS\Program Files 64\LD\MS\_non"
    1. ldpgp.exe - \Program Files (x86)\LANDesk\Shared Files, \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite
    2. ldpgp.sig - \Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite

If you are installing a fresh v9.6 console and then the SP2 patch you require Microsoft.NET 4.5 to be installed first. If you do not when you run setup.exe for SP2 you will receive an error as shown below

There is a note in the SP2 readme about this:

 

Important Note: LDMS 9.6 SP2 update requires Microsoft.NET 4.5 be installed on any Remote Consoles prior to installing the patch. Patch Manager can be used to update machines with .NET 4.5

 

If you already have a console installed with v9.6 SP1 then you can install SP2 as SP1 added Microsoft.NET 4.5 to your PC.

How to download and install Service Updates (SU)

Download the latest patch content

  1. Login to the Ivanti/LANDESK Console.

  2. In the Patch and Compliance tool, click the Download Updates icon.

  3. In the Download Updates window, check the box under Windows | Software Updates | Ivanti 10.1.1 Software Updates.   The screenshot is from a 2017.1 Core Server. For 2016.3, the box to check is LANDESK 10.1 Software Updates.
  4. Click the Download now button at the bottom of the screen.

  5. When the download completes, click the Close button.

  6. In the Patch and Compliance tool, click the filter on the upper left side (All types) and select the LANDESK update option from the list.

  7. In the Patch and Compliance tool, click on LANDESK Updates (All items) folder on the left side.
  8. Click on the Severity column at the top to sort the results by the severity.
  9. Look for vulnerabilities/patches that have Service Pack in the Severity column. Find the service pack with the newest date in the Date published column. This will be the latest Service Update available.

    Note: Only the newest Service update is needed because all of the fixes in the previous updates are included in the newest one.
  10. Double click the newest one to open its properties.

  11. In properties of the patch, right-click the detection rule that has Core in the name at the end and select the Download Patch option. Do not select the one with RollupCore at the end of the name.

  12. When the patch finishes downloading, remember the name of the patch file and the location it was downloaded to so you can get to it for later steps.
  13. Click Close.

  14. Right-click the detection rule with clientat the end of the name and download it.
  15. When the client patch finishes downloading, close the download window then click OK to close the patch window.
  16. In Windows Explorer, go to the folder where the Core patch was downloaded and find the file.
  17. Right-click the patch file and select Properties.

  18. On the General tab, if there is an Unblock button at the bottom near the Read-only check box, click the Unblock button to unblock the file.
  19. Unzip the file in a folder on the Core Server.

 

Preparing the Core Server for installing the update

  1. Backup the Core Server by following your Corporate policies for backing up servers.
  2. Backup the Ivanti/LANDESK database. Get help from your Database Administrator if you do not know how to do this.

    Note: Do not skip the backup steps because they are your safety net in case something goes wrong during the install of the update.

  3. Updates can fail if there are any mounted WIM files on the Core Server. The following community article has information on cleaning up the WIM files before installing the update:

  4. Alternate Data Streams (ADS) on the Core Server or on the update files can cause the upgrade to not update all files and causes strange behavior after the upgrade is complete. Remove ADS on the Core Server before installing the update. The following community article has information on Streams and how to clean it up:

Update the Core Server

  1. Reboot the Core Server.
  2. Login to the Core Server with an admin account. If you are doing this through Windows Remote Desktop (RDP), make sure you use the /admin switch when starting the RDP session.
  3. Close the Ivanti/LANDESK Console if it is running and close any other applications that are running on the Core Server.
  4. Stop any Antivirus software and other Security software that is running on the Core Server so they cannot interfere with the update.
  5. It is not required to stop the Ivanti/LANDESK services before installing the update but for best results, it is recommended that you manually stop all of the Ivanti/LANDESK services that are running to make sure they stop successfully.
  6. In Windows Explorer, right-click the SETUP.EXE file in the folder where you unzipped the update and select the "Run as administrator" option.
  7. After the update finishes installing, reboot the Core Server.

 

 

Note: If the install errors, view the log file and look up the error on theIvanti Community . If you cannot resolve the issue, open a case with Ivanti Support's Install team.

 

 

Update Rollup Cores, Remote Consoles, and clients

The Remote Consoles and Rollup Cores can be patched manually by running the same SETUP.EXE that was run on the Core Server to update it. The following steps show how to use Patch Manager to update the Rollup Cores, Remote Consoles, and Clients.

Note: The update must first be installed on the Core Server before attempting to patch the RollupCores, Consoles and Clients..

 

 

  1. In the Patch and Compliance tool in the Console, right-click the update and select the Repair option in the list.

  2. Click on Agent settings on the left side.
  3. Select a different Distribution and patch setting or Reboot setting to be used for this task if the ones used in the Agent installed on the clients do not have the options you want for installing the patch.
  4. Click Save. This will create the task and take you to the Scheduled Tasks tool.

  5. Add targets to the task by dragging and dropping the computers from All Devices in the Console on the task or add queries to the task.
  6. Right-click the task and select the Start | Now option to start the task immediately or set the start time that you want the task to start.
  7. Wait for the task to complete.

Installing CBA8 Failed - Try Again - In-place upgrade to Ivanti Endpoint Manager 2018.1 from the 2017.3 SU3

We get the following error message when upgrading to 2018.1

About renaming a Core Server

Question

Can a Core Server be renamed once installed?

 

Answer

No. It is not supported to rename the Core Server.  If the Core Server must be renamed, the system should be rebuilt starting with a new installation of the Windows Server operating system the media or from a stable base image.

Installing CBA8 Failed - Try Again - In-place upgrade Or New Install 2018

Scenario:

 

New install or in place upgrade fails at

Neither renaming of the .dll referenced elsewhere or clearing out old certs worked.

Issue: LANDESK 2016 Fails at "Is Database Ready for Upgrade"

Issue

The install of LANDESK 2016 fails at the step "Is Database Ready for Upgrade?"

 

Resolution

There are some prerequisites that will be checked and cause it to fail:

     1. Core Rollup enabled - the upgrade will fail if Core Rollup has been enabled. This needs to be disabled for the upgrade.

 

     2. DB User Rights - the database user configured in LANDESK Configure Services is the user being used for the upgrade. This user needs to have sys_admin rights in the database itself. Not having these rights will cause the upgrade to fail.

 

     3. In IIS right click on default website > edit bindings > edit https > ensure that the 'hostname' field is blank

 

If the upgrade still fails after these prerequisites have been set, there are some troubleshooting steps listed below:

     1. On the core server, open regedit. Navigate to key

          HKLM\Software\LANDESK\ManagementSuite\Core\Connections\Local

          The value for isNTLM needs to be set to "False".

 

At this point, the install may continue past the database check and fail at the step for "Installing CBA8"

     1. See this document on how to fix this error - Error: Execution of CBA8InstallCommand during inline upgrade from LDMS 9.5 - 9.6 and upgrade to LDMS 2016

          ***Note*** The file location on your machine may vary a little bit, depending on where you extracted the installer to. For the default file location for the 2016 extractor, the folder is C:\LANDESKSoftware2016\LD\MS\PF\LD\MS\_non\ldlogon.

Installation Fails on Resetting IIS and Manual IISReset Fails to Run

Problem:

During a core upgrade the Installation fails on the Resetting IIS step, and manually running IISReset is failing as well.

When you run iisreset /status you may see the W3SVC service is stuck in a 'stopping' state.

 

 

Cause:

The following Microsoft patches that were released in July are responsible for the problem.

After installing this update, some devices running network monitoring workloads may receive the 0xD1 Stop error because of a race condition.

When an administrator tries to stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3SVC), the W3SVC remains in a "stopping" state, but cannot fully stop or be restarted.This issue is resolved in KB4345424.

Failed installing identity server when upgrading to Ivanti 2017.01

Hi all,

 

I am upgrading my LANDesk core server from LANDesk 2016 to Ivanti 2017.01 and it has failed at Installing Identity Server. Rather than do the upgrade on our production environment I decided to be safe and do it on a Development environment first. The environments weren't setup by myself and I haven't used our development environment before, I am fairly new to the business. I did all the necessary pre-checks and made sure pre-requisites were met beforehand using the forums and product documentation. Upon doing the upgrade the wizard stopped at the step "Installing Identity Server". I checked the logs and found the following error message in:

Upon doing some research on the internet, any documentation I could find and the forums here as well as comparing the development environment core server with our production environment core servers I found that in IIS>Server Certificates we are missing the certificate called 'LANDESK Secure Token Server' which might have something to do with this however my experience in LANDesk is somewhere between basic and intermediate and therefore I am not sure what to do next and how to resolve this. I have contacted Ivanti support however despite this server being out of action and this being a SEV 2 they seem to be extremely slow at responding and not much help and so if there is anyone in the community that has had similar issues with the upgrade process and failing on Installing Identity Server and has any ideas of how to fix this it would be much appreciated. I believe this has something to do with ISS, Server Certificates and STS but I don't know how it should be configured or know enough about it to troubleshoot further.

About the minimum version required for upgrades

This is a simple chart designed to quickly reference what the minimum required version a core needs to be on in order to upgrade.

 

Note: It is recommended to be on the latest service pack or service update level for each version before upgrading. Being on the latest service pack will help reduce problems during upgrade.

This document covers how to install / upgrade to an Ivanti Endpoint Manager ( EPM ) version 2017.3

 

Ivanti Endpoint Manager ( EPM ) was previously known as LANDESK Management Suite ( LDMS )

 

Note: The documentation refers to not doing installations over a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) session.  However, it is acceptable to use an RDP session if using the /ADMIN switch to open a console session to start your installation to a remote Windows Server

How to troubleshoot the core server installation (advanced)  - EPM 2017.1 and later

This document will follow in a linear format the EPM 2017.1 Core Server installation showing the steps that it takes, log snippets, and will contain markers of known issues at certain places in the installation.

 

 

Log Files, Order of Operations and Locations

 

When troubleshooting the installation it can be important to get a list of all of the logs sorted by the last modified date in order to find the proper log for that timeframe of the installation.   A list of some of the log files for installation can be found by looking for *.log under C:\ProgramData\LANDesk.

 

Additional log files will be under \Program Files\LANDESK\ManagementSuite\log.

Initial Setup and Prerequisite Checks

  • C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\10.1.10\Log\LANDesk.Install.LDMS_YYYY-MM-DD Time.log

What can go wrong at this point

 

  1. Checking for Online Updates
  2. Selecting installation language (The options are English (United States), Chinese (Simplified),  Chinese (Traditional), French (France), German (Germany), Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (International)
  3. Accepting the End User License Agreement (EULA)
  4. Selection of what you want to install.  (Core Server, Remote Console, or Rollup Core Server)
  5. The following list of needed pre requisites is displayed (If you click the checkbox for "Check all prerequisites")

    Typically at this point, IIS Configuration and .NET Framework are the prerequisites missing.   However, heed warnings and ensure proper memory and disk space is available.

 

IIS Configuration

 

  • C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\10.1.10\Log\IIS7_Scripted_Install.log
  • C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\10.1.10\Log\LANDesk.Install.LDMS_YYYY-MM-DD Time.log

 

Search for String in Log File: "

 

What can go wrong at this point:

 

The IIS Configuration consists of the following:

 

- IIS Web Server role (IIS Web Server Role must be installed)
- Windows Process Activation Service (Windows Process Activation Service)- IIS 6 Management Compatability (IIS 6 Management Compatibility)

 

The IIS Installation Log file is located here: C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\10.1.10\Log\IIS7_Scripted_Install.log

 

The installation logging starts in the C:\ProgramData\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\Install\10.1.10\Log\LANDesk.Install.LDMS_YYYY-MM-DD Time.log with the following DISM command:

Database Selection and Configuration

 

At this point, the choice to either Configure a new database or Upgrade an existing database is made.

 

Either SQL Express or Microsoft SQL Server can be selected.

 

If SQL Express is entered the following the installation moves directly to the next step of selecting the install path.

 

If selecting the Microsoft SQL Server option the following screen is presented:

For the purposes of this document, we will select SQL Express.

Typically at this section, only the drive letter will be changed if necessary.  Please ensure that an ample amount of space is available, at a minimum the recommended available free space of 50gb.

Issue

When installing LANDESK Management Suite the following error is recorded in .msi log file:

 

1904.Module C:\Windows\SysWOW64\AMS_II\capicom.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024770. Contact your support personnel.

 

Cause

The capicom.dll file either never copied successfully, or was deleted after it was copied.

Resolution

  1. Copy the capicom.dll file manually from:

    <install source>\LANDESK\LDMS\System32\Source_LDCommon\_non\capicom.dll
  2. Paste it to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\AMS_II
  3. Click retry

 

The installation should run successfully from that point.

Error: "The core server you are connecting to does not appear to have a valid license"

Issue

 

After upgrading a core server to a newer major release (e.g. 9.6 to 2016 or 2016 to 2016.3s), you may face issues with licensing and subscriptions.

 

  • Starting the Management Console, you receive the message "The core server you are connecting to does not appear to have a valid license."
  • You are unable to activate the core once you upgraded / installed the new version
  • Your core is not downloading patches any more (missing patch manager subscription)
  • Your Management Console does not contain all the features it used to have

 

Cause

 

This happens when your license account contains the license and the subscriptions for the version you are upgrading from, but not for the following release.

It can also happens when you renew a subscription and your license contains only the latest version of the LANDesk Management Suite product, not the one you are running, if you don't have a Core Server running the latest release.

 

Resolution

 

1. Before starting an upgrade to a new major release, check your current license and subscriptions from your current core server, going to:

Start > All programs > LANDesk > Core Server Activation.

2. Verify that all the products, licenses and subscriptions are present and not expired for the release you are planning to upgrade to clicking on the Licenses button:

3. If you notice that some of the licenses and subscription are not present for the version you are planning to upgrade to, ask the support team to check your account and adjust the versioning of your LANDesk products, starting from the http://support.landesk.com page.

 

If you are using an older version

 

In some cases, you might want to install a version which is not the recent major release.
For instance, you might want to install a 9.0 core while at the moment of writing the most recent release is the 9.5SP1.
It is possible to face the same problem as above if your licenses and subscriptions are valid only for the 9.5 version.
The procedure to follow is the same in any case. If you find out you are missing a license or a subscription for the version you are going to install, ask the support team to check your account and add the versions you need.
